"Because of Jesus Christ, we believe that Christians are called and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live our lives in service to the world. Through acts of love and justice, worship and witness, we share God’s boundless love with the world."
One of the greatest challenges that Jesus offered to his followers was his command to "Love our neighbors as ourselves." In offering this new commandment, Jesus was inviting all who followed him to consider the needs of others in addition to our own, and to explore ways in which we might meet the needs of those around us. This is an invitation that we take seriously at Immanuel, and below you will find a few of the ways that we serve our neighbors as we continue to explore new and interesting ways that we can meet the needs of others and transform our community.
Serving Meals at the Salvation Army
Several times throughout the year, members of Immanuel Lutheran Church spend part of their Saturday serving meals at the local Salvation Army community center. We gather as a group to prepare, cook and serve the meal to members of the community as well as taking time to get to know these neighbors and share a word of grace, love and friendship.
We normally serve on the fifth Saturday of the month when a month five Saturdays. Our next service opportunity will be on November 30th, 2013.
All are welcome to serve.
Sunday in the Park
For each of the last three summers, Immanuel Lutheran Church has spent one Sunday morning in July worshipping in Hubbard Park here in Meriden. This worship service, followed by a barbecue/potluck lunch has allowed us to connect in a greater way with our community by showing that worship can take place just as easy in park as it can in a church building. Though this is a new tradition for our community, it has quickly become a favorite of many and a service that we look forward to each year.
Neighborhood Hot Dog Roast
Each year in the late-summer or early-fall Immanuel Lutheran Church hosts a neighborhood hot dog roast and invites all the members of the neighborhood to join us for that event. This gathering was originally started as a opportunity to get better acquainted with our neighbors as well as to introduce our church community to those who might not know anything about us. In addition to serving hot dogs we also provided side dishes as well as games and other activities. The event was a great success and has become an annual tradition for the past several years.
Our next Neighborhood Hot Dog Roast will be in the fall of 2017.
These are just some of the ways that Immanuel Lutheran Church reaches out to our community every year. In addition to these events we also regularly raise money for ELCA World Hunger, schedule clothing drives, support needy families, and respond to any needs presented to us from our local community.
We are always looking for more ways to serve our community and continue to pray that God may guide and direct us as we seek to be the hands and feet of Christ.
